ng Connect Program Develops First ‘One Step’ Method for Secure Mobile Access to Enterprise and Cloud Apps on Next Generation Broadband Networks

Proof-of-concept application for on-the-go mobile workers; can now securely sign-on to multiple networks and services from PDAs, mobile phones, PCs with one password

Kanata, Ontario, October 7, 2009 The ng Connect Program today announced that its members Gemalto, the world leader in digital security, and Alcatel-Lucent have developed a new ‘Secure Anywhere’ solution concept application that eliminates the multiple steps employees must take to access enterprise or secure cloud applications while on the go.  This new development highlights ng Connect’s commitment to the rapid deployment of next generation broadband services based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) and other ultra high bandwidth technologies.

What Is Secure Anywhere?

Secure Anywhere allows mobile workers to access the content and applications they need “on the go” or from their home computers in a secure environment. Secure Anywhere protects them from outside threats like hackers while providing an easy log-in option based on the OpenID standard, a  popular authentication process.  OpenID permits users to log into corporate or internet-based cloud services using a single digital identity or code - completely eliminating the risk and inconvenience of creating and remembering different passcodes for multiple services.

How Does ‘Secure Anywhere’ Work?

Combining innovative technologies from the two member companies results in a secure, simple solution for users.

  • Gemalto’s UICC (Universal Identity Circuit Card), a high performance smartcard that can host GSM SIM and 3G UMTS applications together with additional value generating applications, confirms the user’s identity. It creates a ‘one time’ password which is relayed back to the service provider via their 3G/4G networks. Gemalto OTP (One Time Password) client embedded in the UICC allows standard, convenient and flexible security, and remote credential provisioning. The UICC is available in either SIM card format (inside the device) or as an external “Smart Dongle™” which plugs into the PC USB port.  The user connects to their corporate network from their PC or mobile device, and enters the OpenID code or ‘address’ which allows them access to any authorized corporate resources or internet-based services from anywhere.

  • Gemalto’s SA Server, the validation server for OTP strong authentication, provides authentication relying on open standards. It enhances security with two-factor authentication, guarantying user’s identity while protecting their personal information and identity credentials.

As the mobile worker connects to their desired network or service, Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniAccess products go to work in the service provider and enterprise networks to provide the enhanced layer of security, identity management and communications support. The solution utilizes features of:

  • OmniAccess 8550 Web Services Gateway (WSG), to ensure an open and secure Web services/SOA environment for business-to-business transactions and Web 2.0 services by governing how users interact online to prevent fraud, mitigate risk and maintain compliance.

  • Alcatel-Lucent 8661 Directory Server, to provide a centralized and network independent real-time storage of subscriber data including personal, identity, and privacy preference user information.

  • OmniTouch 8660 My Teamwork application, to provide customer service through secure audio conferencing, HD video conferencing and collaboration, click-to-talk, phone presence and communications-enabled business processes (CEBP) without specialized hardware, software or a virtual private network (VPN) connection.

The ng Connect Program continues to develop innovative solutions and services to drive adoption of next generation broadband networks across a wide range of industries including consumer media and entertainment, enterprise collaboration and e-Healthcare, automotive connectivity, digital signage and network-based computing.  The program’s mission is accomplished through a global ecosystem of infrastructure, device, content and applications companies working together to enhance the next generation broadband end user experience.

“Gemalto recognizes the significant identity and data security challenges posed by increased user demand for mobile access to corporate applications and third party services as more of us work, shop and recreate from home or remote locations,” stated Jean Claude Perrin, VP LTE, Advanced Telecom Offers Division, Gemalto.  “Through the ng Connect Program, we were able to bring our end-to-end security expertise and very quickly combine it with Alcatel-Lucent’s deep network knowledge to create a mobile security solution that will make access much easier for users regardless of the device they are using. It will also offer network operators and enterprises a simple, easy-to-deploy security solution for its corporate customers, third party application providers, internet merchants and others.”

There are many applications for the Secure Anywhere Solution Concept for mobile network operators, corporations, retail chains, and the financial services industry to name a few.

“The ng Connect Program is pleased to welcome Gemalto, a recognized digital security leader to our rapidly expanding ecosystem of next generation network innovators,” stated Derek Kuhn, Vice President, Emerging Technology and Media, Alcatel-Lucent.  “Gemalto brings critical security expertise to the mix which will greatly enhance the user experience for future services by enabling secure and easy network access through innovations like the Secure Anywhere Solution Concept.”
